Most businesses don’t think about their sign until something’s wrong with it. A letter falls off. The face cracks. The vinyl peels at a corner and starts catching wind. A tenant moves out and leaves holes where their letters were mounted.
Here’s a realistic look at what commercial sign repair involves — what’s fixable, what’s worth fixing, and when replacement makes more financial sense.
What We Repair
Face replacement is the most common repair on cabinet signs and channel letters. The translucent acrylic or polycarbonate face yellows and becomes brittle with UV exposure — typically after 7–12 years in the San Jose climate. We remove the old face, cut a new one to the same dimensions, match the original color or update it, and reinstall. The cabinet structure and electrical components stay in place.
Vinyl replacement covers faded, peeling, or damaged vinyl on monument signs, post-and-panel signs, Dibond panels, and cabinet faces. Digital print vinyl has a typical outdoor lifespan of 5–7 years. When it starts to fade or lift at the edges, a vinyl swap restores the sign without replacing the structure. This is one of the most cost-effective repairs available.
Letter reattachment and replacement handles individual letters that have come loose or gone missing. Dimensional letters mounted with standoffs or adhesive eventually work loose, especially on brick or textured surfaces where the bond weakens over time. We match the existing letters in material, font, and finish — or replace the full set if a partial match isn’t achievable.
Panel refinishing applies to MDO, aluminum, and HDU signs that have surface damage — scratches, impact damage, or paint failure. We sand, prime, repaint, and re-letter the panel. The result is effectively a new sign on the existing structure.
Hardware and mounting repair covers broken standoffs, bent post hardware, damaged cabinet frames, and sign topper repairs. If the structure is sound but the mounting is failing, we repair or replace the hardware without touching the sign face.
What We Don’t Repair
Electrical and illuminated sign work — LED retrofits, transformer replacement, wiring, internal cabinet electrical components — is subcontracted through a licensed electrical contractor. We coordinate the scope and project manage the work, but we’re not the electrical crew.
We also don’t repair signs where the structure itself has failed: severely rusted cabinets, rotted MDO substrate throughout, or aluminum frames bent beyond tolerance. At that point, repair costs more than replacement.
How to Decide: Repair vs. Replace
The rough rule: if the structure is sound and the repair cost is under 50% of replacement cost, repair makes sense. If the structure has multiple issues or the sign is already 15+ years old, replacement often delivers better value over the next decade.
Some questions that help the decision:
- Is the structure (cabinet, post, base) in good condition?
- Does the sign still match your current branding, or has it drifted?
- Are you planning any rebranding or business changes in the next 2–3 years?
- Is the sign meeting current San Jose sign code, or would a replacement require a new permit process?
We do an on-site assessment before quoting any repair. A photo helps us scope the work in advance, but we need to see the sign in person to confirm the structure and identify any hidden issues.
Permit Considerations for Repairs
Minor repairs — vinyl replacement, face swap, letter reattachment — generally don’t require a new sign permit in San Jose. The sign footprint and structure aren’t changing.
If a repair involves structural changes, electrical work, or an increase in sign area, it may trigger a permit requirement. We flag this upfront so there are no surprises with the city.
Turnaround
Most repair work completes in 1–2 weeks from assessment to installation. Face replacements and vinyl swaps can often be done in a single installation visit once materials are ready. Letter replacement depends on sourcing time for the specific material and finish.
